Soldier killed, 6 others wounded in clashes in Surigao del Sur
One government soldier was killed and six others were wounded in two clashes between government troops and leftist rebels in southern Philippines on Tuesday, the military and police on Wednesday said.
The first incident happened when a group of patrolling soldiers and militiamen belonging to the army's 75th Infantry Battalion encountered over a dozen New People's Army rebels at Bogac village, Lingig town in Surigao del Sur province around 12:30 p.m., said Superintendent Martin Gamba, regional police spokesperson. Three soldiers and a militiaman were wounded in the hour-long firefight.
Government troops also recovered an unexploded landmine at the encounter site.
A second encounter happened late Tuesday afternoon in San Agustin town, also in Surigao del Sur, killing a soldier with the rebels also suffering casualties, said Colonel Romeo Gan, commander of the army's 401st Infantry Brigade.
In Bukidnon province, a soldier was also wounded in a landmine explosion that hit a military truck in a village in San Fernando town late on Tuesday, the military said. (philstar)
